Italian Apple Cake (Torta di Mele)
A timeless Italian dessert that’s easy to make and filled with the comforting flavors of apples.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3-4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan to prevent sticking.
2. Cream butter and sugar
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
3. Mix dry ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
4. Combine wet and dry ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the cake dense.
5. Add the apples
Gently fold the thinly sliced apples into the batter, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
6. Bake the cake
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
7. Cool and serve
Let the cake cool completely in the pan before removing it. Transfer to a serving plate.
Optional:
Dust the top with powdered sugar for a classic finishing touch before serving.
Tips for Success:
- Use a mix of apple varieties for a balance of sweetness and tartness.
- Ensure your butter is softened for easy creaming with the sugar.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
Enjoy this authentic Italian treat with your family and friends!
