Crispy Mini Blooming Onions in Air Fryer
Ingredients:
- 4 small onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- Cooking spray
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Onions:
- Peel the onions and cut off the tops.
- Carefully cut into each onion, creating “petals” by making several slices into the onion while leaving the root end intact to hold the petals together.
2. Mix the Flour Coating:
- In a bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper.
- If you prefer extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mixture.
3. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
- In another bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1 cup buttermilk.
4. Coat the Onions:
- Step 1: Dip each prepared onion into the flour mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated between the petals.
- Step 2: Then, dip it into the egg and buttermilk mixture.
- Step 3: Finally, coat the onion thoroughly with 1 cup breadcrumbs, ensuring an even layer of breadcrumbs sticks to the onion.
5. Air Fry the Onions:
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Spray the coated onions with cooking spray to help them crisp up.
- Place the onions in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded, and air fry for 15-20 minutes. Check halfway and respray if needed. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy.
6. Serve:
- Remove the crispy mini blooming onions from the air fryer and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, garlic aioli, or spicy mayo.
